Lesson 1 - Density

Lesson Overview

In this lesson students will be introduced to the unit phenomenon of explaining how certain population density patterns develop in Western Washington State.

This lesson will begin the unit by introducing the idea of density as well as introducing new rhythms and routines for the class. Phew! It'll be a busy unit intro day! In addition this will be the first day that I'll be taking over after my student teacher concludes his teaching so lots of transitions upcoming.

Intro Task

Each table will receive sheets of foil. Around the room will be 3 fish tanks of water with pennies next to them. Students will have 4 minutes to build a boat that can hold as many pennies as possible.

Vertical Whiteboard Collaborative Task

In my class there are 8 groups so I use 8 sets of vertical boards.

Today there are 4 thinking tasks so I'm making two copies of each.

I'm printing multiple slides onto a single page for each board, having students answer the questions directly on the board then rotate boards.

Introduce Content (Slides + Guiding Document)

Students will have a guiding document through the main portion of the lesson:
